Project description
The Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP) is the official body for trademarks and designs registration in the Benelux. BOIP can also record the existence of an idea on a given date in an i-DEPOT.
The old website was hard to find (bad SEO) and if found it was very hard to use. As a visitor finding the right content wasn’t easy the way the website worked was everything but intuitive. The way the website was set up in the past didn’t have the end user in sight at all.
Kaliber was in charge of UX and design, SWIS did the development.

Previous situation
The number of registrations at BOIP where low, especially the registrations from the Netherlands. A lot of starting small and medium companies are not aware that they should protect and guard their brands, designs and intellectual property.

The old website was hard to find (bad SEO) and if found it was very hard to use. The right content was buried deep in the website and the way the website worked wasn’t very intuitive. When the old website was built they didn’t have the end user in sight. For this project we (SWIS) collaborated with Kaliber Interactive. Kaliber did the UX and design, we developed the website and are still a partner in the optimization process of the website.

The following targets where set for the new website:
• increase awareness of entrepreneurs about IP and brands (making IE relevant)
• image: profiling as an IP knowledge expert; - increase brand awareness;
• The corporate website has a knowledge base, for which the different target groups are get them relevant information (infographics, reports, films, etc.).

The following KPI’s were set in advance:
• the number of new visits to the website in 2017 with a minimum of 10% increase compared to the average number of visits in 2013-2015

Todays’ numbers:
• In the first month, organic traffic increased with almost 23%
• Bouncerates on the most important landingspages dropped to an average of 5%!!
• Major increase in overall SEO scores
• The ‘register my brand’ page had 89% new sessions in the first month

The KPI’s for just one month look really promising and we are confident we can keep a hold of this beautiful results.
Challenges
The real technical challenge was the way the CMS was set up. BOIP has been given even more flexibility and freedom than is the default in Drupal. They can manage/edit the entire homepage, this may sound easy but this is definitely not the case. The can adjust everything without compromising the design and/or interface.

We have also took iframing to a new level. It is seamless and impossible to detect by the visitor, so no hick-up in the user experience there! Needless to say an API is still on the backlog for 2018. So eventually we can let our precious iframe go and continue with the API. Hurrah!
